The Strange Side of CT

Introducing our new section. The Book Nook. Here we feature small Connecticut book stores. I love a good book. One of my favorite things to do is pull up a chair to my front sun facing window and take some time to read. Here in this section will be your book tour of  Connecticut!

πŸ“š A Journey Through Time with Breakwater Books πŸ“š

Founded in 1972 by the visionary duo, Marion Young and Marion Harold Breakwater Books started its humble beginnings in a small spot in Guilford, Connecticut. Fast forward a decade, and the bookstore seized an opportunity to expand into a larger space - a place it calls home today on the Guilford Green.

πŸ“Έ Breakwater Founders, 1972 πŸ“Έ

Our mission has always centered around delivering a diverse selection of books for both children and adults, coupled with the finest customer service. We are proud to have remained steadfast to this guiding principle, continuously serving the Shoreline Community and the Greater New Haven area.

🌟 Community Pillar 🌟

Since Maureen Corcoran took charge in 2007, Breakwater Books has flourished, earning its spot as a cornerstone of the community. In 2017, under Liza Fixx’s leadership, we saw a remarkable transformation that included expanding spaces and introducing a dedicated children's section. The baton then passed to Richard Parent and Paul Listro in October 2019, who further enriched our offerings by augmenting categories and embracing the e-commerce revolution. A heartfelt thank you goes out for guiding us through the challenges of 2020-21, preserving Breakwater's legacy.

πŸŽ‰ New Beginnings with Dani and Rob Howard πŸŽ‰

As of April 2023, Dani and Rob Howard have embarked on their journey with Breakwater Books, eager to extend on previous accomplishments and deepen our community ties. Get ready for exciting offerings like author events, play readings, music nights, and book clubs! And in a bid to give back, 5% of our sales will be donated to local organizations such as Guilford ABC and GFFE. The more, the merrier, as increased patronage translates into greater community contributions. Help us spread the word! πŸ“’

🍹 **Indulge in the rich tradition of taste with our premium soda line!** You might think, "Everyone in the beverage industry claims to put out a great product,” and you'd be right. But at Hosmer Mountain Bottling Co., we invite you to discover the difference.

πŸš› **Rooted in Tradition with a Forward-Thinking Spirit**
Founded in a year of change, 1958, when Arthur J. Potvin took the reins of Hosmer Mountain Bottling Co. from Mrs. Fred Meyer, the company began its journey under the guidance of the Potvin family. Arthur's dedication, assisted by his wife and two eldest sons, Bill and John, spearheaded the transformation of Hosmer into a beloved regional brand.

πŸ₯€ **Crafting the Best Soda Around**
Back in the day, crafting soda was an art, with Arthur learning the ropes through trial and error and the guidance of an experienced salesman. In those early days, soda was made with bagged sugar, wooden cases, and sturdy, refillable glass bottlesβ€”practices that laid the foundation for today's exceptional quality!

πŸ› οΈ **Innovative Changes and Lasting Traditions**
The evolution of Hosmer saw the addition of the now-iconic logo, a bold shield symbolizing stability and tradition. While trends in packaging evolved with reusable fiber cases, the use of heavy and reliable glass bottles has stood the test of time.

πŸ’‘ **A World of Flavors to Explore**
Hosmer's commitment to customer satisfaction continues to this day, offering many of the same beloved flavors from its inception, alongside an exciting array of new offerings, like diet beverages, refreshing seltzer water, and trendsetting drinks that cater to a wide palette.

πŸ”Ž **Experience it Yourself!**
Don't just take our word for itβ€”_experience_ the delightful variety of flavors Hosmer Mountain Bottling Co. has to offer today. Visit our premium soda line and be part of a legacy that spans decades!

- Cheers from the Hosmer Family 🍻

We are going to start I84 west to Route 72 to exit 4 at the end of the exit take a left. In this area you will find J Timothys Restaurant and Sliders Grill Both have great chicken wings! If your starting early maybe stop at Bagels Plus at the corner of Route 10 and 372. Down the street from them is the Flea Market at the Crossing. One of my favorite places! 2 floors of LOTS of antiques and collectibles. If you like cameras your first stop should be ont he second floor first door on the right. He has some great old cameras in his area. He also has old newspapers if your into that as well. Right next door is The Witches Dungeon Classic Movie Museum. This is a MUST STOP in my book. Here you will find old movie memorabilia of old Hollywood Movies especially the Horror Genre. Basically you can park in one lot and walk over to the other building. Once your done there if you still haven't eaten then keep heading west and hit The Main St Diner. Super cute diner with all the usual Diner food. Must hurry they close at 2pm. Its worth making a stop and seeing the inside of this little diner. Then going back the way you came take a right on Whiting Street right in front of the police station. Once your on this road you might want to make a stop at Relic Brewing. Remember son't drink and drive. They have many craft beer offerings. This area looks like a warehouse district, your right. Its in there. Continuing down Whiting St it will merge with Route 10 South. If your in the mood for food this slice of road has Italian, Mexican and American fair. Also, if your in the mood for Lobster then Moms Nothing Fancy is gonna be your stop! Enjoy fresh and fired seafood here. Once your done eating you might want to stop at the  Custom Camper shop. Do you like camping or have you ever thought of camping? Maybe take a look at the starter campers they have there and their prices aren't too bad. Well keeping down Route 10 we are headed into Downtown Southington. If your in the mood for a good cup of coffee then Perkatory Coffee Roasters might be a stop you want to make. There are some other shops in town that can satisfy that coffee craving as well. Once you get to the green take a right onto Center St. There is parking on the left past the first stop sign. If you don't want to walk around outside then go further down to park at the Factory Square building. Here you will find an Escape Room, Craft Brewery, Pinball Game center and more. Stay a while downtown. There is lots to see. Figure on spending at least a few hours here. There is Splunkers, GamecraftCurioporium, The Groggy Frog and more. Once your done here You can get back on Route 10, follow the signs back to I84 or Keep Exploring!

Did you know..

In October 1775 Benjamin Franklin stopped in Old Lyme to see a demonstration of a new secret weapon - The Turtle for use in America's war for independence. On a remote site on the Connecticut River near where it joins Long Island Sound, Franklin watched the world's first working manned submarine sink out of sight beneath the marshy surface and then reemerge some distance away. The vessel was the invention of David Bushnell, who was born in Westbrook CT. Replicas of The Turtle can be viewed at the CT River Museum in Essex.
